Yeah Bill, i know the truck HAS these things, and I kind of know what they do, but not really. I did a wikipedia read on points. that helped.
Not a big fan of points, but it is set right it can work well.
But as mentioned, coils are usually rated higher then the older stuff, generally it's smart to replace the coil with the condensor to ensure everything is compatible and up to snuff. Even go as par as changing the point or atleast inspecting it for burned corroded marks.
I generally swap to HEI setup for my trucks and keep spare module, coil, and cap and button in the toolbox.
I changed the points already. I just have to get the condenser. I went into autozone and told the young kid i needed a condenser and he looked up air conditioning units. these young-uns have no idea what a point system is. they thought they had it, though, but the box was empty. pep boys here i come.
i read in wikipedia that airplanes still use points because they don't fail all at once, they fail over time. that makes sense. you don't want your plane engine to die. if it starts running rough, you at least have a chance to land it, i suppose.
Steve, if my memory serves me my dad use to replace the points, condenser and coil on the old family '68 Impala when one of the components failed. Heck, I remember him grabbing the emery cloth to "touch" the points up to get some more use out of them....lol.
Howdy folks, happy Saturday. Sitting down for lunch, but there's a few things going on today. Much cooler out there now that the rain has moved through.
Howdy folks and happy Monday eve, I guess. Busy today, decided to detail out the OBS a bit. Turns out it was just a rain dance...lol. None the less, it got a much needed coat of paint sealant that it hasn't had in quite a while.
