I'm guessing a boiler explosion sending half of the engine skyward and flipping, like a cartoon, landing on the track in front of the remainder of the moving train, which collided with the debris. Those things were somewhat common in the late 1800's. Train work was really dangerous back then. I think you can see the ghost of the engineer in the lower right, floating down the tracks.
Two sets of wheels though. I'm thinking a head-on collision???
