LOL , Dennis. Only you would notice that! Two lead pipes were replaced in our house. One was the trap to our upstairs commode.

Jess (Jesse Guy Harp) was a plumber in Lexington. His company, Harp Plumbing Heating & Cooling is still in business today.

Here are a few more pictures from the "Lafayette Studios" collection at the University of Kentucky library:

Sorry for the huge size.
There are hundreds of pictures from the 1930s in this collection.

Air over hydraulic center post in the floor. You can see another one in the next bay over, behind the supervisor.

I had a lift like below for quite a few years. The smaller tube keeps the vehicle from rotating, and when extended, there is a safety catch that folds out to keep the lift from falling in case of failure. The EPA wants all these things taken out by EPA certified companies because of all the oil in them.

That's what we had at the Shell station where I worked as a teenager. To be honest, they are easier to use than the two-post or four-post lifts, unless you are working on exhaust or driveshafts. They're especially great for working on wheels and hubs.

Sometime in the late 60's when I had a part time/summer job in a gas station we had a dual rail lift like in the 1st pic and the owner had the "head" replaced with one like the 2nd pic. For many things I liked the rails better.

Nearly all of vehicles back then had tube rear axles and the cradle for axles just slid front or back to sit under the axle. These wouldn't work at all with IRS.

my body shop had a grease pit, and a "slider lift".
you pull the car forward till the rear wheels fell into the pockets and stopped.
than get out and grab a 6 foot pinch bar and slide the front lift under the front wheels.
once you had the lifts centered under the axles you would hit the two levers to lift the car.
a few times i caught people that did not know how to use the slider lift running it dangerously uneven.
after one guy almost dropped a car by lifting the rear and not the front, i put a lockout on the controls and told everyone to use the pit of leave lifting a car to me.
about 15 years ago the town told my partner to get rid of the pit and lift and put a real lift in.
he pulled the lift and filled the pit in and just used jacks after that because no one used the lift after i got out of it and he bought me out. .
