I just watched this movie for the 1st time a few weeks ago. Grew up watching the I love Lucy show & I
had a hard time with their names in this movie. LOL Tacy & Nicky

Yes, my Dad had one of these hitches. We had an old trailer made from a Ford front axle with wire wheels. We hauled oak lumber from a local mill about 5 miles from the house in Valencia, PA north of Pittsburgh. All I remember is that that lumber was heavy. The hitch never came loose and Dad used to put a rag between the hitch and the bumper to keep it from getting scratched.

I remember seeing them on cars..I've seen bumpers on pickups that failed miserably too..

Long trailer

I saw the movie again about a year ago, the Merc was equipped with a receiver hitch and the trailer had a pair of wheels below the hitch and had electric brakes. The movie had Ricky having the parts added to the Merc and kept complaining about the $. At one point the Merc had to climb a long grade and was holding up traffic and of course the Merc was struggling. I actually saw the movie when it first came out.

This is a great thread! Brings back a lot of memories. Of course, since I was born in 1949 a lot of these vehicles were in use when I was a kid.
