Thomas E. Dewey ran for president in 1944, lost to FDR .. He ran again in 1948 against Harry Truman.
The day after the election, Truman is shown laughing while he's waving a newspaper, front page has a huge headline: DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN!
A big mistake, Truman won.
This picture was taken in Salt Lake City, the car is a 1946, 1947 or 1948 Ford Sportsman. Dewey probably carried the state because UT has been Republican since 1897 when it joined the Union.
Notice the sign in the background: Deseret Book Co. The Mormons wanted to call the state Deseret, because this means honey bee in the Book of Mormon. US disagreed, Utah it was.
TR's daughter, Alice Roosevelt Longworth said that Dewey looked like the figure on a wedding cake. He was never able to live this down.
TR once said, I can control Alice or the United States, I cannot do both.
