Turn off interior lights, drivein movie, etc

I did a mobile phone search last night at the drive-in movies last night and couldn't find a way to turn off the interior dome lights in my 2002 Excursion with the rear hatch and barn doors open.

The fuse for the interior lights are for the dash and also turned off my radio

So here is the answer.

Use a pen or similar item to "close" the two latches on either side of the rear hatch. They must go closed TWO clicks. Viola! Thinks the hatch is closed

No sensors on the barn doors. The plastic mating "tabs" are NOT sensors or switches.

Nice thing about this procedure is you can still turn on the interior lights with switches.

Just BE SURE to hold the rear hatch handle up and use a pen or whatever to "open" both the latches so they are open to accept and engage the little bar when closing.

Also turns off exterior lights like the lighted running boards.
VERY EASY!

Do you have the dimmer switch to the right of the light switch like in the picture below? If you turn it all the way down it will click and should turn off your interior lights.

Mine doesn't click down, only in the up-most position. Although I notice you have auto-lights, whereas I do not as mine's older... Could be a year-model/option specific thing.

Like Matt's, mine doesn't click in DOWN position. I also have auto lights. So there are now THREE variations right there, LOL.

Thanks for the tips just the same. Maybe it will help the next fellow when parked with his family

Ok, so I don't mis-lead anyone....When I got home I wanted to validate what I said and I was not correct. Mine acts similar to the above two posts.

My confusion is with my wife's expedition and it does turn the interior lights when I move the dial down until it clicks.

So, I guess what I need to do is try and swap them to see if we can get the same effect from the switch of the expedition but using it on the excursion.

Ok, I swapped the switches and even thought they are inter-changeable the off setting that works on the Expedition does nothing on the Excursion.

The Expedition does have an extra wire going into the switch that must cut the power to the overhead lights. This would be a cool mod for our vehicle if we can find what would cut off all those lights.

Look for "dome override".
We have a mod to install a switch for the Excursion to manually turn off interior lights.
The running board lights remain on, but we all live with that, since It's more complicated to get to the running board circuit.
With a door open, only other way.... you wait 15 minutes for "powersaver" to kick in and turn off lights, if you open another door it resets timer.. if you close and then reopen door that also resets timer.

I just pull the fuse at the drive in, a 5 amp fuse I believe like 3rd down second row, kills the windows too but works good. Inflatable mattress in back, barn doors closed, hatch up - it's super comfortable!

That didn't work in mine (think I read almost the same wording while there).

Mine was the fuse for the instrument cluster, which INCLUDED the radio (which is needed for the movie broadcast, LOL)

I tried several fuses...

I think we'll try the mattress idea next time. Sounds awesome

Ok, so I did some additional testing on my wife's expedition. The wire going out of the switch that the Excursion is missing has a constant 12V going out from it. When I toggle the switch off it kills power to the wire and also to the interior lights. I also noticed the wire is black/blue, a similar color to what most threads use when they are using a switch.

At some point I will
order another switch,
find the correct wire,
cut it,
run a new wire from the switch to the cut wire
and hopefully that will do it.

Here is some talk about it with a wiring diagram.

I am so following this as this EXACT issue has been driving me bat crap crazy for well over a week. Everything works as expected EXCEPT the interior and running board lights will NOT go off (ever) as long as a door or rear hatch is open.

I found this regarding the GEM but it didn't help but may help others understand the GEM and (some of) what it does. This section only pertains to the lights.

"The GEM/CTM controls all audible chimes and warning lights. The GEM/CTM performs a prove out on all GEM/CTM controlled warning light miniature bulbs (13466) (except the seat belt and door ajar) by turning on the miniature bulb for two seconds after the ignition switch is turned to RUN from START.

Note:
The exterior lamps are not part of the battery saver protection, and will remain on even if the GEM/CTM turns the interior lamps off.

The GEM/CTM will keep power available for all interior lights including the dome lamp, map lamp, outside rear view mirror illumination lamp, door lamps, glove box lamp (if equipped), ashtray lamp, key ring lights, cargo lamp, for 45 minutes after the ignition switch is turned off. The battery saver time is reset by receiving an illuminated entry request from the RAP module (if equipped), activating a door ajar switch, changing the ignition to START, or moving the key to the RUN or ACC position.

The battery saver feature removes extended interior lamp power drains to the battery (10655). The GEM/CTM keeps power to these loads for 45 minutes after the ignition switch is moved to OFF. After the ignition switch is moved to OFF and 45 minutes have elapsed with no change of state on any wake-up inputs, the GEM/CTM will enter a sleep mode. During the sleep mode, the GEM/CTM maintains all of its outputs in a deactivated state until a wake-up-command is received. For additional information, refer to «Section 417-02».

A wake-up command is sent when:

l A change in door state from open to closed, or closed to open occurs.

l The key is inserted or removed.

l The ignition switch is turned from OFF to RUN.

l The ignition switch is turned from OFF to ACCY.

l A wake-up request is received from the remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module.

The GEM/CTM illuminates the interior courtesy lamps when any door is set ajar or is opened. The following are inputs used for controlling the courtesy lamps:

l All door ajar switches (including liftgate).

l Illuminated entry request with RAP module.

l Two-step unlock door disarm switches.

All interior courtesy lamps are turned off when any of the following occurs:

l All the doors are closed and the illuminated entry feature is not active.

l The ignition switch is turned to RUN.

l Vehicle speed is over 8 km/h (5 mph).

l A power door lock command is received before the five seconds have elapsed for two-step unlock.

The GEM/CTM controls the interior lamps illuminated entry function with the interior lamp relay. The relay is activated by applying ground to the relay coil through C283-12, circuit 1008 (LG/O), and is deactivated by removing the ground.

The RAP module sends a signal to the GEM on the illuminated entry request circuit to indicate a request to turn the illuminated entry feature ON or OFF.

The GEM illuminates the interior lamps when an unlock signal is received from the RAP module. The illuminated entry feature will be canceled when any of the following conditions are met:

l 25 seconds have elapsed since the illuminated entry feature was activated and the interior lamp control is not activated.

l The GEM receives a request from the RAP module (remote transmitter lock button pressed) and the courtesy lamp control is not activated.

l The ignition is in the RUN or START position and the interior lamp control is not activated.

The illuminated entry inputs are:

l Door open warning lamp switch (grounded when the handle is lifted; an open circuit when the handle is released).

l Ignition switch in the key-in, ACCY and RUN position.

l RAP illuminated entry request."

My 2003 goes off eventually, takes a while. All interior and external lights. Drive in and camping are no problem at all.

Manual for my 2000 states that the timer is set to shut off interior lights after 45min. But if another door is opened, the timer resets.
