I am not sure what is hard about it? You would be copying someone else's work.

With that article, and $6800 bills, you can have a 500hp 400ci Ford.

Another question, how difficult is it going to be to transfer from a 351M/400 to a 460? Do the engine mounts bolt in, or weld in? Same with transmission mounts?

Shame you don't live closer Shameless, I've got a 400+ hp engine i just pulled out of my car.

It'll sit here for a bit, eventually I'll end up stuffing it in a truck or something....

I'm in Ga
429 + .030 D1VE block, D0VE heads, etc
elgin 1088 cam (kinda like a cj cam)
roller rockers, march pulleys, aluminum intake and waterpump, etc etc.
a cam swap would make it 450hp with relative ease (I have another cam that'd do the trick, I was just too lazy to toss it in), I appreciated it being super simple to drive, lotta torque, could idle in traffic until you run outta gas. 60 psi oil hot, etc. Was a really nice build I've had for a number of years. I dunno, I guess it's 400hp just based on previous experience, never put it on a dyno or anything.
I had it in my Galaxie, but just HAD to build a higher hp FE for it, so it's sitting on blocks right now.

I did it like I always do, had to have the best of everything just KNOWING I was gonna keep it forever..... I should really know better by now.

Here, take her for a spin:

What he said all the way down to the motor mounts!

Attachment 288663

I used Solids, and had to modify to get my engine stance right. Most of the MM's out there for a 460 will set the engine too low in the engine bay.

Hey my gas mileage sucks like everyone else here mentions but I have a lot of fun with this truck and love the power! - 460 is actually a 521 Stroker! Hold on to your Lug Nuts! -

Sweet setup Randy, that pulley system alone is awesome.

Are those Edelbrock or SCJ heads on the 521?

Thanks, yes those are aluminum SCJ's on there (expensive *******s), good eye! PO somewhere along the line put a 460 in the truck. I was going to just make it a 466 and throw some Edelbrock performers on there, alum intake and a 750. As you can see what started out as a simple (I jest here) 460 rebuild went haywire! (I'm not really sure where the term "haywire" came from) Nevertheless, I was in it, the old crank just wasn't turning out...so I Stroked it! Eagle crank, rods, Comp hydraulic cam, 850 (only cause i could)...

Oh yeah, that's a March Performance Track Style Kit..i wanted a killer look but most of all that serpentine system.

I have almost 800 miles on the truck (rebuild), it's my fair weather street queen and man am I having a blast! - I would say to anyone asking this question - 429/460 (Big Block) is the way to go!...these vehicles were never good on fuel to begin with, so might as well enjoy the power!

There are a few mods when installing a BB to do but it's worth it!...the 335 series engines are nice and workout great for a DD's but there really is nothing like a Big Block in a Dent!

Right on.....
I was considering making my 429 into a 521 and using AFR heads, stuffing that in my 76.
Problem is the 390 in the truck runs great and I just finished a way too expensive engine build and dunno if I can stomach another right now :P
Last build with 100 miles on it:

400 can be built to a decent engine. Just getting a good cam and getting the valve timing straight up makes a difference. I vote 460. Build it for the task you expect. No sense spending the extra money for 500 horse if you just drive it to work. If it's just a weekend toy and you like to spend money, go nuts.
Been there on the 300, have owned and loved several but for the same milage you can have more grunt in a 302, and not have to listen to the 6 banger drone. Plus try to warm a 300 up a little and the fuel mileage goes down to 460 levels real fast. No reason a good breathing stock 460 with the right gearing can't get 12+. I've had a couple efi ones that consistently average above 14.

Randy and DeepRoots what were your dynamic compression ratios? Nice motors for both of you! There is very crap gas here so I was curious what your final builds ended up being.

It's mostly about where the intake valve closes.

Wallace Racing: Dynamic Compression Ratio Calculator
Using this, the dynamic ratio of my 351M is 7.83 to 1.

A good explanation. Dynamic CR

10½ to 1
Comp hydraulic Roller cam 248/248 .620 lift

93 Octane only, I actually put/mixed a few gallons of 100LL AVGAS during the break in...runs out great just on the edge of what I wanted for street. In that big heavy truck, she's perfect.

In my truck with those solid motor mounts, you really feel like your riding a rocket when you let er eat.
