Bummer. Blend door actuator broke!
Guys--
I was checking out my nonfunctional A/c system today after changing the heater core, when I found that the lever that the blend door vacuum motor attaches to is broken off at the door. I know I have to replace the vacuum line, as it is pretty much in tiny pieces. The A/C will only blow thru the Defroster vents right now.
Anybody have a suggestion on what would be the best way to patch this? I'm thinking drill the blend door post out, put some JBWeld in the broke off top, then drill the JBWeld and put a screw in it.
If I have to change it, anybody have any experience in changing one? I'm at a total loss.
Also, when I attempted to upgrade to R134, the rocket scientists at my local AutoZone sold me an R12 orifice tube. My system doesn't cool worth a load of dingo's kidneys, so am I correct in guessing that I need the R134 orifice tube?
Also, how do you flush your system? A buddy of mine that works for Ford told me that I could just add the R134 PAG oil to my existing system (no draining of the compressor) since I was replacing the accumulator. Is this right?
My compressor turns, but doesn't cycle or cool. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

PAG is not compatible with mineral oils. To flush your system disconnect everything and blow it out with solvent. (either the 25$ can of stuff they sell just for this.... or whatever you think you might like to try. I loved 1-1-1 Trichlor but I they tell me it causes cancer now so that is out. Whatever you use you want it to carry away the old oil and bits of crap and whatnot and flash off.) Ester oil is what all the AC retrofit guys are using now. Go buy yourself a set of guages and a book at Auto zone. Borrow/rent a vacuum pump. PRESTO! You are now an AC repairman.

my '98 explorer acted as if the actuator had stopped working after I removed it and drove the vehicle for a week. But it was just the computer - the computer stopped trying to send power to the motor/actuator. Probably because it was not getting a postion signal from the actuator during that week that I drove with the actuator removed - I disconnected the battery for a five minutes, and that fixed the problem.
