HEI Distributor Wiring

I have replaced my Stock distributor with a new one wire HEI, but I am having problems figuring out where it should be wired to so that when the key is turned on it is receiving a constant 12v. Just for starting purposes I hooked it to the solenoid and made sure that it was working properly. I have tried under the dash to one of key wires, and to the stock wiring that was hooked to the old distributor. both of these spots made the truck fire when the key was turning but not enough juice to keep the engine going. Anyone have any suggestions? Should I just hook it to the solenoid and put a toggle switch on the dash for it??

Thanks for the Help

I have done three of these recently. Hooked the positive coil wire to the HEI dizzy and had to run a wire from the keyed power side of the plug for the ignition control module to the solenoid so that the truck will start with the key. Easy to check with a test light..

You should also have two wires going to your old module. One is keyed 12v supply (on when switch is in run position) and ignition 12v supply (on when switch is in start position). I would tap off those two lines. Better yet, I would run the start wire from the 'I' post of the starter solenoid and run a new keyed 12v wire to your HEI.
