In bed auxiliary fuel tank

Hello all,

I am trying to get opinions on what setup to go for. I am looking right now at either a UWS or a "Better Built" 75-85 setup with a toolbotoolbox is a must after looking at my back seat right now). Going to set it up to just refill my main tank...I dont want it to act like a secondary tank with its own fuel pump and what not, just a refiller. I have a few questions though. All gravity feed setups I have seen just have a manual valve that I have to get out and open to start the flow. Are there any setups out there that possibly also have an electric valve (solenoid) or something to that effect that I can use my aux switches to open it up? I am also somewhat confused with transfer vs auxiliary. From what I understand a transfer tank will always have a full blown hose and handle pump setup so you have to refuel by performing the standard "gas station" type fill. The auxiliary tanks allow for the fuel to be sent directly to the engine. So with the gravity feed setup, am I ok with a transfer tank, or do I have to get an auxiliary tank? The local dealer here says I can do a transfer tank, but I am not fully convinced he is right. Technically I am transferring fuel from one tank to the other tank so I can see where he thinks he is right, but I really dont want to get in trouble with the DOT guys if he is wrong. (even thought I am not commercial, I understand they can still inspect it/me). Any help here would be great.

Regards,
Ryan

I picked up my 40 gallon diamond plated tank at Northern Tool along with the transfer gravity fill kit. With the design of the fuel tank I also have my full size cross the box tool box in place and can still pull our 5th wheel trailer without issue.

With the transfer kit you can either leave the drain valve open or close as it is designed to stop the flow of fuel once the OEM tank is full. Many hear have installed an in cab electric valve and or pump to allow for more control of how the fuel drains from the bed tank to the factory tank.

This is a DOT compliant set up for diesel fuel use.

If you are wanting to use a drain style system for fuel transfer just make sure that the tank you purchase has a lower drain bung for taping into the tank.

I have in the past used an aux. fuel tank with a pump mounted on top of the tank. This was handy for when I needed to fill the fuel tank on a tractor in the field. Down side is that they do make for a messy setup. Not to mention that the tank has two holes on top of the tank. One for mounting a pump the other for filling the tank. If you use the hole on the driver side of the truck for filling because it is on the same side as the factory fuel door then you have to deal with dragging the fuel hose across the far side of the truck bed to fill your truck. If you mount the pump on the driver side then you are in a position to where you now need to pull up to the fuel pump from both sides, one to fill the truck and the other to fill the transfer tank.

My personal preference is Transfer Flow. My auxiliary 40 gallon tank/toolbox was installed in 2010 by the previous owner, spent 4 years in Alaska before coming to Alabama, and is still going strong today. Mine has a secondary pump and transfers automatically using the TRAX II system, but they do offer tanks that are gravity fed IIRC.

I like TF because I had an issue with my in-dash fuel gauge acting up and Brad at TF was very quick to respond. He walked me through troubleshooting and fixing the truck (ground wire and resetting the resistance) despite me not being the original owner and it being almost 6 years later.

They seem to have a well-made product that they stand behind.
