Any substance that has the leavings from exhaust gasses and
any chemicals that cause a conversion to take place aka catalyst
can not be good to breathe. And if one of them happens to be a
heavy metal (not rock band heavy metal) you can look for a cancer
causing dust. I did a search for hazards from diesel oxidation catalyst
and keep getting EPA BS on why it good not on the hazards from
exposure to the dust from a broken converter elements.

There does seem to be a risks from exposure to Palladium dust at low
levels to some people do to allergy issues. Also people that have allergies
to nickel seem to also have a risk.

Just be safe with anything that makes unknown dust. Todays fad can be tomorrows
cancer cause. Not that your putting the stuff on you skin daily but you know how
it can work with dust, Never really gone.

Thought I'd add in something here: Just had a car totaled at the end of the year and it made better financial sense to sell it direct to a Salvage Yard and take whatever the Ins. company offered on top of that.

Talking to the Manager there that buys the cars I said: "there's a ton of great parts on the car, only had 50K miles, Engine and trans, those Cats must fetch some good money...". He stopped me and said: "we can't sell the Cats, but if you want to come take them off, you're welcome to them".

So, I don't know if it is legal in CA for anyone to sell Cats to anyone else at all; I just know that the wrecking yards CAN'T and the Recycle places Can't Buy them. Personally, it might be worth doing some Craigslist searching... I've run across folks on Craigslist parting whole trucks, so getting "part of an exhaust" would be somewhat under the radar, Private Party to Private Party..

Good luck

Same law up here in Washington State. The yards can sell to a wholesale metal salvage for recovery of the metals.
It may be that the law that covers this may be at the Federal level.

Look on Craigslist if this hasn't been solved. There are a couple of dudes who run back and forth across the states buying them up. They melt them for the precious metals inside....mainly the platinum or so the guy told me. I bet though they could maybe sell you one.

Ed over at FICMrepair showed me this site.

Craigslist Search Engine: Easily Search ALL of Craigslist

Lets you search Craigslist by state or all of them. There are a few
options on the search. First time I used it there was some things
that popped up from Ebay. Maybe it was just an ad from Ebay.

Have fun with it.
