Third gear shift problem

Hi everyone.New member here. I recently picked up a '66 custom cab LWB with 3 on the tree and a 240 cu" motor. The truck is pretty much original. Runs well. The previous owner told me and it has happened once to me that some times it gets stuck in third gear. For me it happened when I was pulling near my drive way and went to shift out of third after slowing down. I stopped the engine popped the hood and pulled on the shift rod by the column and it shifted into neutral with no problem. The rev/1st linkage seams loose or has play where as the 2nd/3rd linkage has very little play. There is also wear/belled opening in the shift collar. Any ideas? I have a new a shift collar, column shift lever arms and column shift arm washers to install.
Thanks.
john

If you have them, why not put them on before you tear the trans up.

I am planning on putting them in this weekend if all goes well. I just found this site and wanted to see if others have to say. Any idea what kind of play should be in the linkages?
I noticed that there is a lot of play where the linkages connect to the arms on the transmission.
Thanks.

At the bottom of the steering column underneath the hood are the two manual control selector levers that the shift rods from the trans attach to.

In each one of these levers is a rubber bushing and insulator. The bushings age crack/disintegrate, the shift lever binds up.
