Go here: Dana Holding Corporation The Expert Librarian - Information for driveshafts, u-joints, axles, heavy axles, light axles, Drivelines

I looked it up earlier but could not find a corresponding BOM in the applications manuals. Maybe you can spend more time on it that I did and find the answer....

Rear Diff ID Tag

Well here goes. My research through the 73-79 Master Parts book and the 1979 New Model Trucks Retail Price Book came up with this.
No 2.72 ratio available in 79 in any engine/trans/axle combination for F100 or F150. In regular cab or supercab. Is it possible that your axle was swapped/changed at some point in its life?
The parts book shows 3 possibilties, 2 in 1978, and 1 in 1977. The only DANA 44 is shown as 1977, axle code 46, 2.72 ratio with a 3.3M capacity (3300 lb?)
The other 2 are 1978 and are shown as axle code 02, 2.72, 2.9M cap., and code 11, 2.72, 3.75M cap. I hope that helps. Seems like it may raise a few more questions on the service history of your truck. Good luck!

Anything is possible I guess. Weird that they would swap out the rear end though since the rest of the truck is immaculate and I'm only the second owner. Other thing is that they did add a helper leaf. One would assume if your adding a leaf and changing diff you would go with less of a highway gear. So much confusion.... Lol
