Zero oil pressure on gauge, questions.

So, I started up my V10 Ex the other day, got to the end of my driveway and noticed that my gauge said no oil pressure.

Shut it down, checked the oil level and found it below the safe mark, added oil, and started it. No problems since then.

I know it would be a good idea to put an actual oil pressure gauge in it, but for the moment, I just wonder if this is normal behavior for the gauge?

Do they always show check oil when the oil is low? Or did I actually have a pressure drop? Or maybe my sender is having issues? I hear it's easy to replace.

So, any thoughts?

Did it again this morning. Bounced before going to zero. Shut the truck off, checked oil, still full. Restarted truck and it went up to normal. I know they're an idiot light.

Any thoughts?

I would either hookup a mechanical oil pressure gauge just to get the actual oil pressure or just try installing a new oil pressure sending unit

Read that thread, doesn't really give me any more information.

I'll plumb in an oil pressure gauge and we'll see what happens.

I might mention this has only happened on cold startups after the truck sat all night, and temperatures were in the 20s. Hasn't happened on cold startups with higher temperatures. It has never done it while driving, or at a stoplight.

An aside, aren't the cam chain tensioners hydraulic on these? If they are, wouldn't they make a racket if they lost pressure?

Was telling a old auction buyer today about my truck losing oil pressure.
He said hes heard and seen it on several V10's
]
Told me to dump 3 quarts of diesel in the engine and let it run for 1/2 hour then give it a oil change and put 15-40 back in.

Pickup screen sometimes gets plugged and the diesel cleans things up.
Think Ill give it a try before I spend 3g going with the oil pump change.
