Why Super Duty?

I got my 2000 F350 CC LB Diesel for a several reasons:
- Towing capabilities of the diesel (pulling 5er camper and fishing boat together behind SD enroute to camping destinations).
- Big interior cab space (plenty of elbow and leg room in the back seat for grown folks).
- Can't afford a $50 - 60k truck now, but, my 2000 might be by the time of my retirement.
- Plenty of folks and article reviews say the 7.3L is a great, long lasting power plant.
- Working in the construction industry for the past 26 years, I have noticed the majority of 'Work Trucks' on the job-sites are Fords (maybe it's just me).
and finally,
- it's a 'good looking truck'

Finally someone says what I'm thinking. This is my 4th Superduty not including the Excursion. 4 diesels and a V10. Loved the V10 even though it didn't get real good mileage but then I didn't buy it for that.
I really have no need for a big diesel anymore so I had been considering an F150 in the spring. The more I thought about it the more I leaned toward a 6.2 Superduty. I too love the big frame/axles and good old cast iron engine. My first truck in 1971 was a 1959 Landrover Pickup and I fell in love with pickups and never looked back. My daughters neighbor just bought a new Chev half ton and was going on about who needs a big truck like the Superduty. He's basically a very nice guy so my only comment was To each his own. It's so good to see there are still people out there that still buy a truck because they just like trucks. None of my friends complain about my truck. I only tow a 12 foot Quad trailer right now but this year I've towed a 11000lb skidsteer 300 miles for a friend, a 10,000lb tractor, several 30 foot loaded trailers hunting and even hauled trash to the dump for my brother in law. I've winched people out of mud/ditches and when they're stuck in snow. No one complains when you happen by with a big truck with a 12000lb winch to save the day so to speak. I've read on the forums so often where people buy their truck cause it serves the purpose. i.e. towing a big RV. That's great because I did too. Now I drive one because I just plain like big pickups. It's great to be old school sometimes.
P.S. My daughter just bought her first pickup.

I have an '11 F250, the avatar vehicle. I had an '06 with a V10. It did a good job, but had trouble @7mpg passing a gas station with the current 35'/12,000# 5er. Do I need the CC? No, but do need a SC so I at 6'4" can recline the seats more with them all the way back (bad back). Do I need a diesel? Probably not with the 6.2 doing a very good job. Do I need a long bed? It sure makes really tight turns better with the 5er hooked on vs. the SB the '06 had. Do I need all the gadgets this Lariat came with? Heck there are still some items. i.e. Sync. I have yet to figure out and may never nor do I care.
Now with all that said, yes, I need a full size truck and since I've had one for many years that's the only way IMHO to go IF YOU NEED A TRUCK. A couple friends came up to me and their comments were "OMG that truck is huge".
Last - if you want it, like it, can afford the not unsubstantial care and feeding of that Super Duty, then that's your decision, not what someone else thinks about your choice

tough trucks
I agree the 70's trucks just looked and where TOUGH. I like all the trucks out there. They all give you problems doesn't matter the make. I owned a 2500 cummings and loved that thing. Pricey to get it fixed though. the only problem i have with all the high series trucks is the wheel wells are to high. and you can only go so big with the tires before they rub the fender walls. just my 2 cents

Before my first SD it was a 79 Bronco, then a 2001 F350 V10, 196,000 miles later my 2008 F250 6.4. Do I need a SD, heck no, but at 6'3, 300 Lb's I like to be comfortable while driving. My personal opinion is that my KR does that better than anything I could have bought. F150 is not near as comfortable in seating or side to side space, JMPO.

Could I get by with a f-150? Sure I could but getting by is not alot to look forward to. A bunch of guys on here including myself lift they're trucks for what?? Because that's what we wanna do with our time and money, you want a big *** truck then that is what you need. I believe most people wish for a larger truck not a smaller truck. Unless you park in a parking garage....then you need a smaller truck. Haha

i got my super duty because it is simply what i wanted. it can haul anything i need it to and if it cant, then i dont need it! it will go anywheres i want to and with 4wd, it will get out of there too! as far as having a smaller truck, i grew out of hot wheels! lol no, but thats not for me.

bought my '99 regular cab 5.4l for the same reason as the OP (and many others on this thread); solid axle, leaf springs, maual t-case, no buII$h1+. i lifted it and put 35's under it and stuck it in the mud, snow, and sand with confidence. sure miss that truck sometimes, but it shouldn't come as a surprise that when i needed room for carseats and the ability to pull my trailer i stuck with a SD. i am by no means a die-hard ford guy but i love just about everything about the SD platform.

Because my F-150 can't do this.
But I will say one thing, there is no way that I would buy one of these trucks if I didn't need it for its towing and hauling capacity. And the service manager at the local Ford dealership (who informed me that they had to remove the cab to change the oil cooler) told me the same thing last week. But, like everybody else said, it's your money, spend it like you want. The comments about safety are also a very good point. They're built like tanks.
