2000 XLT 4X4 A/C

Hey guys, got an A/C prob, with my 2000 XLT. Was working fine, the last time i used it, which was about a month ago. Fan is blowing ambient temp. Know jack about A/C except for recharging, using a 12 oz. can of 134a, and hose w/gauge. I started engine, then turned on max a/c. Put hose on can, punctured w/needle valve, opened valve to expel air from hose, then quick connected to low side. Clutch would engage for one second, and pressure on gauge would go up to 48 psi, then after one second, clutch would dis-engage, and pressure on gauge would drop to 32 psi. Clutch engages again, after 4 seconds, and pressure on gauge would again, go up to 48 psi. It keeps doing this constantly, and temp gauge i set in a/c vent remains at ambient temp, which here, is 80 degrees. Basically, i'm getting nowhere fast. Any ideas/suggestions/opinions?

You probably need to read the FAQs (above).

Thanks Project. Couldn't get anywhere with second link, but first link just about told me i'm dead in the water. as far as a DIY...lol. Luckily i don't use it much, and being 13 yrs. old, i think i'll cope with it being down, instead of investing big bucks for a/c repairs. Your help was appreciated
