loose steering on a F250

I have a 91 F250 4x4 and the steering has an excessive amount of play. The ball joint's look good, but when we move the tire back and forth there is play. The tie rods are tight as well. My next conclusion would be the steering box, but I'd rather not tear it out if thats not the problem. Any ideas? Are there any problems with this gen that can result in loose steering?

Thanks, Josh

I forgot to add that when turning right it feels like there is no power steering and it makes it difficult to turn. Turning left is no problem. The power steering fluid is full

There is an adjustment on top of the steering box. If I remember correctly you need to lift both front tires off the ground, then loosen locknut and then adjust screw. Honestly I didnt have much luck with it on my old 93 before I sold it. You might need to replace the box. Also check all of the tie rod ends, the rag joint etc for play when you have it up in the air.
Good Luck

Not saying it's not the steering box - but ...

I'd spend a little more time looking for the looseness in the ball joints and tie rod ends.

If you can't see it, get a helper to wiggle the wheels while you put your hand on each tie rod end and feel for any movement.

be sure to try it without the wheels on too - especially if you've got big tires.

Sometimes the weight of the wheel can hide ball joint looseness. Pull the wheel off and rock the brake rotor up and down - you might be surprised to suddenly find a real loose lower ball joint.

Of course - the feeling you're getting when turning the wheel probably wouldn't be explained with ball joints or tie rod ends - but, it's also not a reason NOT to check them more closely as you'll need to rule out all variables anyways sooner or later.

good luck.
