I am in the process of restoring my 1977 F250 highboy my question is this. Can I remove the original 351M motor and replace with a 460

Hi Jep,

The other guys can give you a lot more information but from my experience it is fairly straight forward to make your change. For my '78 F250 I swapped out my old 400m with a 429. I would suggest looking to L&L (www.landlproducts.com)
for motor mounts, they worked really well for me. Good luck and get us some pictures of your build.

In someone's opinion if you had a 351M in the truck would you convert to a 460. If I did what would I get in terms of overall performance (power). Is it worth the investment. Did Ford from the factory install A/C in 1977 highboys with the 351M motor.

Factory installed integral A/C available in all 1973/79 F100/350's regardless of engine size & 1978/79 Bronco's.

There were TWO other types of dealer installed A/C offered for these vehicles.

The cab from the 77 is not repairable so my plan/thought is to purchase a 2WD with good body parts and place them onto my rolling chassis. Will the cab from a 2WD with a 460 with AC work if I choose to leave the 351M motor and install AC.

frame issues

I have begun removing parts off the 77 F250 and have discovered the rear 2 cross members have rust issues the actual frame appears to be fine. Has anyone else run into this if so is there a aftermarket supplier for frame parts.

LMC Truck Parts

Are the body panels/parts the same gauge steal as the OEM. Are the parts quality from LMC ????

There is no supplier that I know of for frame crossmembers, but you could always make your own. Aftermarket body panels are not as thick as original and fit is a hit or miss. If you want quality original tooling body parts go with Dennis Carpenter or much cheaper, find rust free used ones. A new OEM front fender is like $400 from DC. Repair panels are not as thick either, but they work OK for repairs.

Hey Jep grind the rivets out remove cross member.grind the rust off ,if need repairs ,find a local small welding shop and have them repaired, keep your eyes out for old dents in backyards or back woods, alot times they will give you the stuff, dont be afraid to ask.I have a long list of parts that were there for the taking, take your time ,it takes time,In the end each piece has a story.

I like lmc but it isn't as good as the stock parts
Yes on the cab but you will need to change out the mound in the middle with a 4x4 one or cut the one on it for the transfer case . The 460 is more power and toque for towing and pulling less mpgs all around is all I know about them Ac is a add on from the factory isn't really worth the money it only kind works I have the system laying in my shop floor because it was just in the way and only worked in temps up to 90 then it just heated up the motor with no cold air

Hey Tinstar in your opinion upgrading the 351M to a 460 w AC is not worth the effort for the reason it doesn't really cool the cab down in hot whether. I can see where it takes valuable space under the hood. Should I build without it. Does it cause worse MPG what is the best that I can expect when completed.
