When I bought the airraid drop in filter for my truck ( it had sucked in the fram filter about 2" upward) I noticed that it didn't fit my airbox very well. All I did was put some heavy duty spongy window foam in the airbox and put filter on it, sealed it up very tight.
Had to do the same thing to the crappy kn filter I got for my 90 truck.

If people would just pay attention, they wouldn't be dusting their turbos.

Cleatus,

I completely understand what you are saying about the stock air box working as designed with the filters it was designed to use. Would you still say the stock air box would work with some of the turbos people are using these days? (Other than stock)

I honestly couldn't say. By the time I put the TNJB on the 2001, I already had the 6637 on the truck. However, I guess I can't really say that the TNJB/USA/BBW/Ball Buster is that much of an "improved" turbocharger than stock....but they don't surge!!

Originally I put the oem Filterminder in the end of a 6637, and it never tripped. Clay saw my install and mentioned he had never seen one trip with a 6637, just a waste of time. So I capped the Filterminder and tucked it under some harness for when/if I put the oem box back on. When she starts blowing a little more black smoke than usual I know it is time for a new filter.

x2 on cold air intake not making much difference on a turbocharged intercooled engine. Normally aspirated, yeah.

My pickup trucks are still running the stock airbox and even the stock exhaust. Seems to work for me, however I am careful to make sure the boxes are sealing properly. I have K&N filters that get cleaned and oiled every 15k (same time the fuel filters get changed).

When I was researching custom calibrations, everybody said that I had to "upgrade" the intake and exhaust so I kept searching. PHP was the only tuner who told me that they could write calibrations for trucks with stock airbox and exhaust. They also were the only ones (at the time) that offered tow tunes for the weight I was running. Turns out they were correct, I have a healthy power increase even with stock intake, turbo, injectors and exhaust while still keeping EGTs in check. As far as I know, turbo surge isn't an issue either.

For modest power increases, I think the OEM parts are fine.

For those with '99-'01 trucks who are going ...
The '02-'03 trucks have an electrical connector on the filter minder.

Thanks! I had almost gone out to the garage to find my old minder. Almost.

Will it throw a code? I have the wired one but never thought about it.

Unless I heard him wrong, Brian (BTS) runs the stock airbox in his go fast truck. (The diesel) If/when the stock box in the '01 goes south I may give the stock 6.0 box a shot.

I recently re-installed the stock intake to get rid of the 6637 noise. I think a lot of the reason people do the 6637 is because it's an easy and inexpensive early mod. It was my first, and that was the primary reason I did it. Over time pulling the 5er around, I got tired of hearing Darth Vader under the hood and the accompanying turbo noise from both the WW and now the ported housing.
