Help, My X is running rough!

V-10 getting a weird hesitation on acceleration and rough, spuratic idle. Fuel filter is brand new, spark plugs only have 8000 miles on them. If im just cruising and give it just a little gas it gets real rough and wont smooth out unless I give it more gas.

What else could it be? Coil packs?

Thanks,

Trevor

Also if you just did the plugs check that they are torqued down to 13lbs each and in solid.

Sweet! I ordered some coil packs and should have them by this weekend. I'll check spark plugs when I change the coil packs out. Thanks guys!

Make sure you use genuine motorcraft plugs and coils. Check your boots too.

I don't think your coil packs are the problem. You mention that the problem starts when you're cruising and you give it more throttle. A bad COP wouldn't care how much throttle is given; it would malfunction whether under light or heavy engine load.

There is a TSB out that addresses a misfire and cites the O2 sensors as the culprit. Have any diagnostics been performed? Has the PCM been scanned? How long has it been doing this? Is it able to be recreated, or is it more of an intermittent problem?

Why does everyone want to throw coils at every misfire problem?

Only reason I do is because I had exactly the same issue he is having and it was the #2 coil pack. It would start to run rough, and give it more gas and it would smooth out. Slow down, runs rough. I think the reason is simply as the people behind the wheel it feels as if the engine has smoothed out going faster because the 9 take up the slack better when going faster than when going slower and so we think it is better even though it still isn't firing. I also feel coil packs based on what he has changed so far, but hey that's just my 2 cents worth, I've been wrong before, and I'm quite sure I may live long enough to be wrong again So OP come back and tell us if the coils fix it or not because enquiring minds want to know!

@Crazy001, I beg to differ
When I had bad coils it would be almost fine at idle only misfire 2 or 3 times a minute, then when you started going down the road at mild throttle it would buck like crazy, but if you pushed the gas more the misfire would go away. I put 10 eBay coils in it and 10 premium aftermarket plugs from the local shop in there and it has been great ever since, about 12,500 miles put on since.

I'm glad it worked for you. My main point wasn't that it's impossible for a coil to cause this problem, but rather that some diagnosis work is in order before throwing parts at a problem. Coils aren't consumables that need to be replaced at regular intervals, and there are numerous people that never have a coil go bad.

There are a wide variety of things that can cause a misfire, and coils are only one of those things.

I had this problem recently, and it was bad gasoline. Water had leaked into the tank at the station.

YEUP Coil Packs here to I replaced 4 of them, and proceeded to change all the coil springs and spark plugs and lubed the connections with dielectric grease And I haven't had an issue up till now.
I have what I suspect to be is a bad fuel pump So research has begun on how to stop drop and roll that stinker and R&R that bad Santa so I can my X back on the road!

Why does everyone want to throw coils at every misfire problem?

because its a common issue lol

i have to disagree, it is possible and the first place i would look(since all of my past misfires have been bad coils). i had a miss that only showed up when i was cruising. either in o/d at 65ish mph or in 3rd at 35-40..gave it slight gas to mantain..ect it would start bucking like crazy. but if you floored it no problem.

turns out all my coils had corrosion in them. i ended up replacing all the coils with motorcraft and have not had an issue since.

And that can happen, but without any kind of diagnosis how can you be sure? What do you tell the guy who spends $500 on new coils on your recommendation and it doesn't fix a thing?
