AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT FOR 04 EXCURSION 6.0

Hi Guys,
I have a 6.0 diesel and need to replace the air filter. I know next to nothing about the mechanics of the truck but I am wondering if I should just replace the stock air filter with another ome filter or if I should invest in an after market one (washable ect.....)?? I would certainly be intersted in something that may offer better performance ect but I don't use this vehicle for heavy towing/pulling....mostly to and from work and hauling.......3 kids around (the x has just enough space to keep the 3 from beating the **** out of each other ). I live in Southern California inland where it can get quite hot but never freezes (not sure if that matters at all) Anyway, just wondering if there was a product that might fit the bill and if so which one might be best?? (I know that is a loaded question as there are many different products and each has their loyal followers but just looking for the most prefered...or better yet, what to stay away from). Thanks for any helpful tips or input.
Jon

You'll gain no benefit from an aftermarket filter. Purchase the stock (BLUE) OEM filter, which is made by Donaldson, and don't worry about it anymore.

One question: Are you getting a dash light for filter replacement or is your filterminder telling you it needs replaced? The stock filter will hold an INCREDIBLE amount of junk before it needs replaced and the filterminder will let you know when.

Im getting neither of thoes things. The truck is in the shop and they told me the filter was dirty and needed to be replaced so I just started wondering. The truck has about 50,000 mi right now. Is it typical to replace the filter about then?

I do mine every 30k, so I've never seen the "check air filter" message... $45 for an air filter every 30k with a $15 toilet paper roll for the trans isn't excessive for guys who add mileage slower, especially when compared to $35-45 for fuel filters every 10k and $14-18 for oil filters every 5k. I drive on a lot of dirt roads, so it's a personal choice that makes me feel better about it, not a "requirement".

Some guys swear they'll last 100k, that might be true if you just drive down paved highway all the time and rack up the miles quickly. I'd rather replace the filter than see the warning message, but if you want to trust the minder go for it.

Who's shop are you using??? Is it a FORD dealer? If not, YOU check the filter Minder. It'll tell you if it needs replacing or not. How many miles on that filter? I'll bet it does NOT need changing.

I suspect that is excessive. Even after a season of field-work and gravel roads, the stock filter is in good shape. I replaced at 60k because I was feeling paranoid, but in retrospect that was just a waste of money. it is good filter and it has a ton of capacity.

OP: Stay stock. It is a good system. Aftermarket will not yield a power increase for a stock truck.

3Lb of dust is a LOT of dust. Think about how heavy you vacuum cleaner
bag feels. Not that heavy really. The look at a normal car filter not
much dust and time to replace.

Texastech_diesel: Where are you getting the trans filter dealer
just quoted me $45.00 and I walked out.

Thanks

I suspect I mentioned that in my post when I said I do it mainly for the warm fuzzies. At 5-8k miles a year I can put five bucks a month into the cup holder for filters and still have enough left over for a beer Heck, over 3 years I'm more likely to have a squirrel chew on the media than I am to clog the filter. Just did my second one in 5.5 years recently, it's still a cheap maintenance item.

I goofed, its $20 not $15. $13 for the NTZ but I use Motorcraft/Racor filters. Again, for the warm fuzzies. I'm not going to cry over $7 on a once-in-3-year maintenance item.

NTZ-09-C09B stock replacement for the Motorcraft FT-145 is 12.99 from Dieselfiltersonline. Buy other filters to defray the 9.95 shipping cost. Racor fuel filter set with water seperator is 35.75. My total bill, shipping included, was 58.69. The more you buy the cheaper it is.
