What is a junk 6.9 worth?
I am contemplating buying a 6.9 idi engine for parts. I could get it for $200, but that sounds a little high.. What do you guys think? Supposedly it ran.. so much for that - it was stored outside uncovered - sounds like it is going to be a hydrolocked junker at the least. It comes with no accessories. I am hoping to get only a few things out of it - injector lines, injector cores and a tach sending unit if they are there. The rest I will most likely try to sell or scrap with the intent to make a little $$ or just break even...
I know it is probably worth only $100 (if that) in scrap iron.
Is it worth $200? Would you all buy it?
Thanks

That's what I was thinking too.
This made me realize monetarily worthless our trucks are Of course this has its ups and downs...
Bottom line: I must resist the temptation to get this motor - unless someone tells me they want something off it that would make it worth it.

It depends on what is there and what you need. People seem to think injector lines are made of gold, so if you need them a set would cost you more than $200.00. A IP core is nice to have laying around. An extra oil cooler is a great thing to rebuid and put on a shelf. If it is stripped it isn't worth much, since all that would be left are internals. Figure 1200 lbs for a long block and see what she'll scrap out for. The motor sitting won't kill it. I would put a socket on the crank and see if it turns over. Hydrolock damage occurs when the engine is started or running. Pull the glow plugs and see if you can turn it over by hand she might just have some life left in her. Cavitation is not an issue with the 6.9 so If she turns over I'd rig a starter to her and do a compression check. You never know.
Good luck,
Mac.

Hmm you all are surprisingly making me want to go pick it up even more If it runs - hey - I'll pull out the perfect 6.9 in my 86, put this thing in along with an intercooled turbo and studs - beat the crap out of it, and not feel bad that I blew up a $200 motor...
Although, that $200 could be put to good use to fund a turbo for my 86 that I don't have yet...

Technically, cavitation is a problem in ANY high compression engines. But some are hit harder than others, or some happen much sooner than others.
The 7.3 is the exact same block as a 6.9 but bored 0.110 over, making the 7.3 cylinder walls much thinner, and more prone to early cavitation if SCA's aren't maintained.
Bottom line, SCA's should be added and regularly checked in ANY Diesel engine! All my 3 IDI's are running with Fleetguard DCA4, and checked at every oil change interval (5k km, 3k miles).

i just bought a recently rebuilt 6.9 that had suddenly blown up...
smokeing blue and white hardcore.
Tore it apart in a few hours, turns out the head gasket failed
NO damage to cylinders, valves were perfect, new pump, new glow plugs, new valve springs, "coal cam" (industrial i believe)
all in all the engine was fine.
paid $100....
not trying to brag, just saying they are out there. Im rebuilding this 6.9. Head studs from arp dropped to $250.
I will post the build soon....lets just say, custom intake, exhaust, twin turbos, 25lbs of boost.
in a 1974 Ranchero....hmmm
