In your shoes I'd be considering the same thing. Have you tried taking a video of this happening with your phone? When my Mustang was having electrical issues they were never able to recreate the problem at the dealership, so I took a video of the gauges going wonky and posted it to Youtube. I then emailed Ford customer service with a link, and that got their attention! After the next trip to the dealer and their inability to recreate and fix the problem they gave me a complementary maintenance package for 45,000 miles because of the hassle.

They eventually replaced the gauge cluster and that fixed the problem, but if it weren't for the videos they never would have tracked it down.

I thought about that Tom but the only thing to recreate is the incident the other night when it shut down on me for a few seconds. Otherwise, the engineer and the techs from the dealership were in the truck during the 25 mile drive and felt everything I did. The diesel tech even told the engineer that I definitely had issues and this was the first time they'd actually been able to reproduce it with any consistency.

Bad thing is that the issue the other night with the truck shutting down was the first and only time it's done it. So basically to catch the two second shut down, I'd have to leave a camera recording every time I drive for the duration of the trip.

I know what you mean though and it's a good idea.

I guess drive it like some people treat their company trucks (I know this goes against how we take care of equipment) until it breaks or you find something to replace it.
Whichever comes first.
I know I was much less careful after several trips and computer updates for a hardware issue.
Right before the shift solenoids were approved, I didn't back off when a shift failed because I was tired of the issue (30,000+ miles).
Downside is I gambled and still have the same transmission that may end up showing signs of issues later in life.
Oh well.

Drive it like you want to, you're not going to hurt it. These things were designed from the ground up to handle the brute force of a 400/800 turbodiesel. I don't think driving style has nearly as much to do with component life as proper maintenance does.

While I agree, I'm not sure they were designed to accidently shift to neutral then slam into gear at higher than normal RPMs.
Of course, not an issue I've had since the hardware fix.

I do just that and then when I think it might **** the bed, I stand on it to make sure it blows. Then there is no question the situation had to go!!!

Well mine has been up to its old tricks again......and a few new ones.

It's still got the shift flares between 2nd and 3rd and 4th and 5th. And all of the junk it was already doing.

Today and last night when pulling out from a stop, it just revved up in 1st and didn't go anywhere. Then it just started creeping forward slowly. Then all of a sudden, it would catch and move along just fine. Transmission fluid is full and fine....no burnt smell and the color is fine.

But, according to Ford, it's a characteristic of this transmission.

Not much choice but to drive it until it lays down on me.

I can't wrap my brain around the FSE's "operating as designed" conculsion.
You have a failing transmission, we know that.
Maybe there is a lot of paperwork involved and she simply didn't want to deal with it?
Not much else makes sense if you ask me.

That sucks to hear, I've had my truck in the shop a few times for the same issues. I get the "learning transmission speech" every time, or I must of the hit the brake pedal then accelerator too quickly. Mine doesn't seem to be as bad as yours, the last flash I got a few months back seemed to help a lot.

I agree, it makes NO sense to leave a guy struggle with that

Reading these post makes me wonder if I will have problems in the future. I havent noticed any "Hard" shifting with mine so far. Hope Stroke 72 gets it worked out. I find it disturbing that FORD wont address this problem head on. Take care of your customers and they will be loyal for YEARS TO COME.

I don't think you need to worry much.
Others have been fixed.
My dealer worked on my truck several times for transmission issues.
They could only provide fixes for my truck as Ford had them.
When I was ready for the new solenoids awhile back, I called the service manager and he said "Yes, we've done several aready. Get it in here so we can fix it."

I think half the issue here is John's dealer and the region FSE.
