Water pump replacement

I am getting ready to replace my water pump since I believe it is the culprit of my coolant leak. Looks like it's leaking from the weep hole. I am curious how much coolant I need to get for this project. I know I will need to get a tool to take off the fan also. So I will get that as well. Just need to know what else I might need and how much coolant to get..

I rented the universal Ford tool from Advanced Auto and it worked for me.

As far as coolant. 4 gallons coolant and 4 gallons distilled if you're draining the whole system.

Thanks, what about if I'm not draining the entire system? The fluid in there isn't that old. I just need to replace the pump.

Not being a smart@$$, just don't know how else to explain. I don't know how much will drain so I would do the job and measure how much comes out during then replace half that amount with coolant and half with distilled water. But that only works if you still have another ride to the store...

An extra hand is helpful. That fan and clutch assembly is very, very heavy. Not to hard to remove but replacing it is tough trying to hold it in place and getting the threads going properly. Good time to replace the thermostat and upper neck to hose assembly if it is in bad shape, most are. Other than that pretty simple job, just take your time and do it right the first time.

Coolant capacity if completely drained is 32.75 quarts.

just did my water pump and have replaced my coolant several times. The international dealership told me each time to add one gallon antifreeze and one gallon of water and use three gallons of antifreeze. Also need three bottles of the dca4. After testing mine with the strips this has always held true. The strips are a good way to tell. I dont think that i would put anymore than three gallons of coolant because the last time i did mine was for the oil cooler and it was pretty much completely drained.

The fan and fan shroud have to come out at the same time, there is not enough room to remove either of them with the other still in place. I'd be better to unbolt the shroud before you start on the fan. Be careful with the fan. The clutch is heavy and if you're not ready to catch the weight when you reach the last threads it will drop and eat a hole in the radiator. You might consider protecting the radiator with a piece of cardboard or towel.

If you drain the system through the lower hose you will get just over 5 gallons out.

Thanks guys, hopefully tackle this before this weekend. It is really spitting coolant now. I went and got the pump today so I will go back for the clutch fan removal tool and the coolant tomorrow or Thursday. I will definitely put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator just in case and hopefully will have an extra set of hands to catch the fan if I drop it... lol T-stat was replaced not all that long ago so I think it would be ok to reuse?

Where do you get your test strips? Is there different ones for green antifreeze

When reattaching the fan to the WP pulley, it's much easier to hold the fan steady and spin the pulley rather than doing it the other way around. The belt is simple enough to put back on last.
