atf in fuel

Hey guys. I use another fuel additive. I was told that some guys use atf. What are the advantages and disadvantage. And how much do you use?

It works as a detergent but it makes your truck smoke raises your egt's and if your tank gets dipped it is red and the deq will fine you a lot of money. I'm not sure if anyone has ever been dipped but if you get caught with red fuel it is bad, tax evasion.

it actually dosnt make any more smoke than usual, it will however turn your fuel red as was mentioned. i dump a little in my filter when i change it, but i just use regular powerservice in the tanks

The new Fuel lubricant/Cleaners are far superior to ATF...

Yup, Back in the day ATF was the thing, no longer!

Adding ATF to your filter 80% or more of it will wind up in the tank ..

-Enjoy

i use ATF to fill the filter every time, and occasionally dump a quart of it in a full tank. never noticed any extra smoke from it.
as for getting dipped, i figure thats only likely to happen in an area where there's a lot of farms or other off-highway users

without getting into a huge discussion about it here, does anybody know of a site that gives you an honest comparison of different additives? a million people have a million different opinions, and every product out there claims huge improvements...

So there is no harm in running atf other than having your tank dipped? Not sure of a web site but a good ides is to put biocyde in your fuel once and a while I just cleaned a 2.5 gallon diesel heater tank today it had about 1.5 cups of bio mass growing in the bottom of it you can pick up biologicals from 1 contaminated fill and it can clog fuel filters damage your cylander walls it is bad stuff.

I've been dipped a couple times now, once I had a transfer tank onboard, so that is an attraction to being dipped, as most guys have coloured fuel in transfer tanks.

Just like speed traps etc, you never know when or if you might be stopped, it's up to you to decide if it's worth taking the risk or not. Even when I asked the agent about ATF as a cleaner, they really didn't say they had a way to tell the difference between it and coloured. Here it can be not only a big fine, but also they can audit all your records, and go for penalties going back 7 years. In my case I don't feel it's worth it, and I've quit running coloured in the off road equipment too. A few cents difference in price for the convenience of filling what I like from the transfer tank is worth it, especially when it's all a write off anyway.
