I would have the battery's tested. They may show a charge, but under load it's not enough to keep things going and if the battery has a dead cell in it , it will cause other problems if you keep jumping it and running the jumper as power.

Cables

Also check cable condition, corrosion can be under the terminals/insulation. Cable end points as well.

Your alternator has failed. = No 12V
Your batteries are dead from supplying all of their available power. = No 12V
The electrical will work when there is the power from the boost vehicle. = +12V
Removal of the boost source removes the 12V available from it. = No 12V

A diesel will run after start without 12V.
It needs 12V to start though.

BUT everything else on the truck needs 12V to function.

Take your alt to the parts store and have it tested.
Then bring the new one back and install it.

I hope that your batteries are still good (?)

Charge them with a plug in charger NOT the new alternator.

I have to agree you can check and see if your alternator is good on the truck take a volt meter your voltage should 13.1-14.8 if it is in the 12v range your alt is shot

and charge it with a battery charger they actually do a full charge

A diesel engine does not use an electrical spark to ignite the fuel mix.
The fuel is squeezed (COMPRESSED) by the piston which causes the fuel mix to heat to combustion.
They explain it much better than I do at;
HowStuffWorks "Diesel Engines vs. Gasoline Engines"

Correct and charging dead batteries with an alternator will kill the alternator as well as the FICM IF the alternator isn't already dead.
