just ordered a fuel pump

so since getting this '02 i've had an issue with the gauge never reading correctly. it would drop the first half wayyyy to fast then the bottom half took forever. this was totally different then my 2004 or 2000 excursions which were very accurate.

so i've had it stick on full or go to full before. once i filled it up it would start working again. well 2 days ago it did this and i filled up and nothing still stuck on full.

so tonight i ordered a new fuel pump with sending unit. the pump is fine but if your dropping the tank any not do the pump also right?

i'll let you guys know if this fixes the whole issue.

Sounds like a typical GM thing. Maybe it's the same sending unit supplier.

I would definitely vote for a new fuel pump while you are in there. Fuel pumps are the weakest link in the whole chain and they go and hide it in the fuel tank, never understood that. Why not outside next to the fuel filter? (like a diesel?)

Just be sure to use brass tools to avoid creating a spark.

I dont have the time to do it myself plus the idea od dropping a 44gal tank does not induce joy lol so that said ill be having a shop do it..little owned and oporated place that ive used for years and I trust.

How would you know if you've completely run the tank down prior to bringing it to the shop? I'd be driving around with a gas can with fuel in case I run out.

i aint running it out lol they can siphon it out if they want. last few tanks i've been getting 7.5mpg ish so i'll go 300 miles and call it good.

i just delt with this at work, i had to drop a tank on a '07 GMC bus which had a full tank. i had to take all the diesel out of it.

ok the pump unit showed up over the long weekend. i dropped the excursion off tonight after work. was told it'll be about $230-250 for install. i'm also having my exhaust manifold studs that are busted replaced. it'll be a little chunk of change but well worth it for my baby

if they are going to take the manifold off to fix the 2 busted ones then they might as well put all new studs in the head.......jmo.......

lol i should have mentioned its all new studs for the manifold. turns out 4 of them were busted actually and had to be delt with in a time consuming way. the truck is not done yet i'll get it back tomorrow. they sent the manifold out to be checked for trueness (if thats a word..i think i just made it up)

the pump went in perfectly he said, turns out this is the 3rd pump my truck has had in it! they found another o-ring for the pump assembly in the bottom of the tank. the pump that was in it was what looked like some cheap off brand as it had no motorcraft markings or any others for the matter. i'm glad i replaced it with a brand new true motorcraft part!

My gauge has never worked and the fuel light is on. PO told me it needed a new sensing unit but I can't justify doing it without the pump. So for now just going by tripometer untill mine starts messing up. Over 165000. now!
