I want a diesel!
Here is my issue. I tow a 95 model travel traile that is 32 ft long with my 97 F150 with a 5.4. The truck does great. My issue is that I want to upgrade to a diesel but I don't have the funds to buy a newer powerstroke.
What do yall think. Could an idi or an early psd be my answer to scratch this itch and upgrade my towing experience? Plus I want four real doors.
How hard is maintenance on these trucks? IE can I replace the head gaskets or rebuild the motor in my garage if need be? I am a very competent home mechanic.
This oil burner itch is driving me crazy!

Sounds like you'll do fine with a diesel. If the 150 with the 5.4 will pull the trailer fine, just wait till you hook it up to a diesel. An IDI or early PSD will do just fine. The early PSD will do an amazing job pulling compared to your 5.4.
Rebuilding the engine is the same as on a gasser, the parts are just bigger and more robust. Find the correct engine forum (IDI or 94-97 PSD) and ask some questions of those guys down there on what to look for when you start kicking tires.
