Help!

A mechanic that was supposed to do a brake job for me got my 2000 F350 4x4 Crewcab 7.3 manual stuck in 3rd gear! Tranny shop wants $1500 to tear into it and won't know til then if it needs a rebuild. Need to explore all my options. Please help! Being bus girl really sucks!
Thanks

Welcome to FTE.Looks like the mechanic is going to be writing a nice check to the trans shop.

I think that should be the case but the mechanic doesn't take responsibility for it and the tranny shop guy says he can't say it was the mechanics fault. I have no idea what to do.

Why wouldn't the mechanic take responsiblity for it? The truck was working fine when you dropped it of for the brake job.

Just curious, but how did the mechanic get the tranny stuck in third gear on a brake job?

I agree. Was this a business you took it to or just some guy?

If that is the case, then the OP might want to factor in the cost of a good seat cleaning, too. If I shot into a garage bay in third gear, I probably would have taken a Super Doodie in the truck!

Apparently the mechanic did not know the gear pattern on my truck and for some reason thought 3rd was 1st. Then he pulled up too far to turn into his bay so tried to back up and couldn't find reverse (partially my fault as the shifter **** is wrong and I forgot to tell him where it is as I usually do) then he put it in 3rd again and moved it out from in front of his bay and when he stopped, could not take it out of gear. Then he called me and said I didn't have reverse. I told him where it was and then he told me it was stuck in 3rd. I asked why it was even in 3rd and he said he thought it was 1st.
Yes it is a shop and came highly recommended.
The mechanic swears he didn't slam it or anything but I think he did, looking for reverse that was not there.

Maybe because I didn't freak out on him. I don't know. He and the tranny guy both seem to think it just happened due to wear (256,000 miles)

Almost sounds like a linkage issue.

So that would mean a rebuild?

He would have had to have done a lot more than confuse third with first to do damage, taking off in third would just cause him to clutch kill the truck, or lug the motor. I hate to say it, but it might be a hard case to prove. I hope you get it resolved though. If it is the mechanic's fault, he sounds like a real winner. He should know the shift pattern regardless of the ****, and like I said, would have to do some real stupidity to that tranny to booger it up like that. Keep us posted.
