Door Hollow Sound When Closing

When the doors are closed on many of these trucks they have a bad hollow sound that makes them sound cheap. Has anyone ever covered the inner door components and sprayed in expanding foam to deaden the sound? Of course I'd leave room for the window to roll down and the door linkages will have a channel left open. Ideas?

Welcome to the not so good old days!

Dyna-Matt every where! Doors, floorboard, ceiling, behind the seat. The stuff isn't cheap though, IMHO.

It will help but NVH wasn't a huge issue back in those days, so don't expect it to ever sound like a 2011 F150.

Funny that you mention it, I have done just that. I put dynamat around the speaker holes and filled the bottom of the doors with expanding foam. I ran tubes to the bottom of the door to where water escapes just in case the door gets water in it. The sound when I shut my doors now is a very solid latching, much lower pitched. The speakers in my doors also rattle a lot less.

Thanks Starwriter, I figured this would be the least expensive way to go and couldn't think of a reason it wouldn't work. Great reminder about the drain. About how many cans did it take per door?

If you don't want to spend the exorbitant amount of money they charge for Dynamat, Raammat is MUCH cheaper and actually far better quality. Only problem is you can only buy it online, so make sure you order enough the first time or shipping could get out of hand.

Spray foam will be a mess and worse than that it will rott out the doors.
I am a union insulator ( heat and frost) piping and crap like that anyways we use a vapor barrior that is pretty much identical to those products, it's made by polygaurd and is called alumigaurd it is a fraction of the cost. I think for the every day Joe it's around 100 to 150 bucks Canadian but it is a roll 4'x50' or 100' I can't remember but it's more than enough to do the entire cab. I've done all my vehicals that had stereos and it works amazing to keep music in and road noise out, I don't tell to many people this as I charge nywhere from 500 to 1000 bucks to do this, but I'm sick of doin it any more so I figures I would share the wealth! Cheers!

I Dynamatted my doors....instead of a "twang", it shuts with a satisfying thud.

Jeg's has a lower cost version and the sealing tape you can get at HD or Lowe's. It's aluminum duct sealing tape. A very cost-effective option.

+1 One of the small idiosyncrasies that reminds me of the 76 Ranger my dad owned. Hear that sound every time I shut the door.

Another option is Lizard Skin spray-on sound insulation. Its kinda like thin spray-on bed liner. Its not cheap but cost less than dynamat. Has anyone used this product?

I haven't used it, however I have seen it on the power block and it looks interesting. I would try it, why not? Has more eye apeal than matting not that you see much if any if you install it correctly.
It's harder to conceal mat in our rigs due to the fact there isn't a lot of plastic crap in the interiors... But that's a good thing!

Peel and Seal is BAD if you live in a hot climate. It's asphalt based and will turn into a runny, sticky goo if it gets too hot.
