Is the 2024 Ram 3500 Really Better Than The 2024 Ford Super Duty Dually?
MotorTrend picked the Ram 3500 as the best heavy-duty dually truck in 2024, but the Ram’s not quite as capable as a 2024 Ford Super Duty F-350.
As everyone – Blue Oval fan or not – is well aware by now, the Ford F-Series lineup has been a dominant force in the salesroom for decades to this point. The competition has tried, time and time again, to dethrone the mighty Ford F-150 and Ford Super Duty in that regard, but to no avail. This doesn’t mean that everyone necessarily everyone prefers something like the 2024 Ford Super Duty to its competition, of course, but it isn’t very often that the venerable model loses comparison tests.
This phenomenon did occur in a recent comparison conducted by MotorTrend between the 2024 Ford Super Duty in F-350 dual-rear-wheel guise versus the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD, 2024 GMC Sierra 3500HD, and 2024 Ram 3500 in a battle for dually supremacy, however. The heavy-duty Ram hauler managed to edge out the Super Duty for first place this time around, followed by the GM twins – which makes one wonder, did MotorTrend get it right?
The appeal of the 2024 Ran 3500, according to MT, is apparently how plush it is, at least, inside the cabin – it has “solid towing manners and a dramatically sumptuous interior when properly optioned,” the rag notes, calling it a “work truck for the boss.” The Ram offers up “much more comfort than the competition,” it claims, but there are some downsides that makes one wonder if this is the right selection for most heady-duty dually truck buyers.
For example, MT admits that the Ram 3500 is “not the extreme workhorse the F-350 is,” and isn’t as capable in terms of max payload or conventional towing capacity – which are, we’d argue, the most important things customers shopping for this type of truck are looking at. Then there’s the matter of technology, and in that regard, MT admits the Ram “suffers the same deficit of tech as the GMC and Chevy heavy-duty pickups.”
As for the 2024 Ford Super Duty F-350, MT praises its superior towing capacity, and its tech such as Pro Trailer Assist, calling it the “ultimate workhorse dually truck for 2024.” The main dig on this particular model, it seems, is its less-than-smooth ride quality, as it exhibits a bit of an old-school feel in that regard. ” Ford’s priorities were clearly on getting the job done, but without a load the F-350 jostles in a way owners of older duallys will find familiar,” MT notes.
Thus, it’s fair to ask – does the 2024 Ram 3500 really deserve to take home the win here, albeit by a small margin of 8.6 points versus 8.3 for the 2024 Ford Super Duty F-350? Well, one could certainly make the case, based on the fact that the Super Duty outperforms the Ram where it counts the most, at least for buyers in this particular segment. After all, how many people buy a diesel-powered dually for grocery runs or taking the kids to soccer practice?
