1949 Ford F-1 ‘Old Smokey’ Is an Antique Racer
Old Smokey Was Built to Do It All. Drag Race, Drift, Run and Be a Daily Driver!
What you see here is one of the baddest trucks on the planet. A 1949 F-1 dubbed Old Smokey. It was built by Chuckles Garage as a truck that can do it all. An all-around hot rod.
It all starts under the hood, where a 5.9 liter Cummins inline-six-cylinder diesel sits. Plucked from a 2005 Freightliner, it’s been cranked up to 11 for some serious speed and serious cool-factor. In addition, Silver Bullet 66 mm, and Big Brother Schwitzer Series 91 mm turbos push output to 1,200 horsepower and 2,000 lb-ft of torque! On this old truck!
Furthermore, a huge water to air intercooler was build to withstand 90+ pounds of boost and make it street-able. As a result, and unlike your typical coal roller, Old Smokey has been tuned to minimize black smoke. Most relevant, the beefy internals mean that you won’t throw a rod after a couple of drag sessions. Because reliability is important.
An adjustable 4-link in the rear and tubular A-arms in the front take care of the handling. Brakes are massive Wilwood 13″ 6 piston units in the front, and 13″ 4 pistons in the rear. In addition, the original chassis has been boxed with tubular components added for strength. The builder did not want to take any chances.
Fittingly, Old Smokey still wears its 50+ year old hand-painted patina with pride, but nothing was overlooked in regards to safety. As a result, a full roll cage, racing seats, and 5 point harnesses keep the driver in place.
After years of work, Old Smokey made its debut at SEMA 2016. The truck has already been featured in Diesel Power magazine, and it seems destined for more attention. Don’t you agree?
