It’s hard to believe, but come 2023, it’ll be 75 years since Ford’s first F-Series trucks left Dearborn. What began as a fresh take on the Blue Oval’s truck portfolio is now the most dominant truck family around. Even with a chip shortage chipping away at sales, the F-Series will still stand firm upon the land once 2021 numbers are accounted for.
With 14 generations of the F-Series in our lives, though, it’s only fitting we look through this immense history to find 14 facts most people don’t know about Ford’s long-running truck family. You’ll definitely be the winner at trivia night with what you learn here.
First Generation (1948 – 1952)
Ford always had trucks around. Most of their lightweight offerings, though, were built upon the likes of the Model T and Model A: car frames with a truck bed placed behind the cab by a third party.
At the end of WWII, though, the Blue Oval saw (and took) the opportunity to build a dedicated frame for a new line of trucks. And not just a frame, but also a roomier cab to ride upon it (which Ford invested $1 million — $12.2 million in 2021 dollars — into creating). The overall goal was to build a truck that was more modern, more comfortable, and easier to drive than any other truck out there.
On January 16, 1948, the F-Series entered showrooms for the first time, changing everything about the truck game on that day, and for all days to come.
