Pro Comp Shocks

OK, question for everyone. Time for new shocks and I have read several threads mostly on Bilsien vs. Rancho, has anyone had any experience with Pro Comp. I visited a local 4X4 shop and he said that Pro Comp were the shocks to go with. Just curious. Thanks for any help. I guess I should point out that I mainly do highway/city driving and occasionally do some heavy towing. I am wanting to smooth out the ride and not beat myself to death on a daily basis.

I recently put Rancho 9000's on the front. Will replace the back next month. Lifetime warranty - easy install considering the height of your truck. Be ready with some muscle especially if you have some rust under there.

I'll second the 9000s. I just installed them on my '97 and the ride is a lot better.
I ran Pro Comp ES3000s on my Explorer for about a year till I switched over too Rancho 5000s and the ride diff was hardly noticeable on road. The 3000s were a little softer, but that hurt off road.

I've got the 3000's on my truck. The rears are fine but the fronts suck. I think I'll be putting some Ranchos on the front as soon as the budget allows it. Buying a new home is more important right now.

What model Procomps?

The low end shock form any manufacture are just about the same, it's not untill you get up in there more expensive lines that you see the differences.

FWIW, there is a guy on another forum that has ran the Pro Comp 3000s, 9000s, MX-6 and finally tried the Bilstein 5100s with the SD specific valving.
He stated that the MX-6 was the best performer of the Pro Comp line of shocks.........but when he put the Bilstein 5100s on he stated that the ride was much improved and ended up selling the MX-6 shocks to someone else.

Hope this helps.

DCSpecial, did he happen to say what he was using them for the most-- daily driving or off roading? Just curious before I shell out the moolah and buy something. Also price wise are the Pro Comps that much cheaper that they are a good deal for the money or are they pretty close to the others?

I believe his main usage is daily driver and he also does some towing with it......it has a 6.5" lift and 36" tires. The Bilstein 5100s are cheaper than the MX-6 and performed better on his truck.

As far as price, these Pro Comp shock prices are from the latest 4wheelparts ad in Four Wheeler:
ES3000: 4 for $131.99
ES9000: 4 for $139.99
MX-6: 4 for $368.99

Stock application Bilstein 5100s (yellow body with blue boots) are $60-65 a piece.......and for trucks with 3" of lift and up (zinc body with black boots) they are $75 a piece.

Hope this helps.

You're a little bit too far away for me to install them .

If you get the Bilsteins, remember to mount them boot down, and that they are a pressurized shock so when you cut the strap they will want to extend on their own.

Being able to dial your ride is the reason I bought and installed the Ranchos. The 9000 series lets you choose the driving condition and then change the shock setting. There is also a system you can install in your truck to remotely change them. This is for all you that like to stay in the cab to flip on your 4 wheel drive. I still gotta get out and feel the ground - so I dont mind twisting the switch to change the function of the shock.
