4.6L swap into 89 f150 (F-STANG project UNDERWAY)
I came accross a totalled 02 Mustang gt, with a 4.6 and an automatic. I thought how great it would be to put it in my short bed regular cab truck to replace the 4.9 5spd. Well i know how many of you guys are going to tell me its a dumb idea, too much work, just do a 5.8 swap. Well its too late. The 4.9 is out and the 4.6 is in!!!
The 4.9 motor mount brakets are 10 inches too far foward, and there is no way to make them work. I went on to Bronco Graveyard and got some motor mount plates for a small V8 as a starting point. I did the first installation of the 4.6 and was amazed how well and closely it fit. I saw that the oil filter would be accessible through a hole in the crossmember where the filter is on a SBF. The A/C compressor will not hit the crossmember. The valvecovers dont hit the firewall or evaporator box. I had to heavily modify the motor mount plates to get the correct height and contour of the new engine.
Next i bolted in the tranny, the bellhousing is inches from the firewall pinch weld but doesnt hit. I used the tranny mount from my 5spd on the new tranny. The factory crossmember was close but not close enough. I had to fab a bracket off of the tranny cross member. Next i called up napa and verified that the u-joint for the mustang was the same as my pickup then installed the front yoke from the stang to my driveshaft. Again to my amazement the driveshaft was the correct length!!! I'm on cloud 9 with how well this is coming together.
I put the truck down to start buttoning up some little stuff and found that the original heater hoses fit to the 4.6 with no modification as did the upper radiator hose using my supercooling rad from before. I ordered a P/S hose for a 99 pickup with a 4.6 and flared the end of it so it would fit in my steering box.
This is as far as I have gotten, and its only been 6 days after work. Pics to come of course and the powertrain management is next on the list. I have fuel rails from a crown vic Which will allow me to use my factory fuel lines, tanks and pumps with no modifications there either as the mustang only has one fuel line and pressure is regulated by the computer and pump voltage. Stay tuned for progress on this UNIQUE project!!! maybe i'll start a trend?

It has been talked about over on the bronco forum: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-4-6-swap.html
But it sounds like the mustang intake makes for better clearance in the engine bay than the truck intake.

sounds like a good project trk,I had a friend try and sell me a 99 crown vic for the same idea for my 78 F100,but I had just finished building a roller 5.0 for it.that and with my newly purchased 95 needed some tlc before it hits the road I have no time, but I am very interested in seeing some pictures and reading more about your swap, sounds loike things are going well so far.
lets hope they stay that way.

I fell into this car for a grand so i couldnt help but pick it up with only 60k on it. I knew the owner and that sealed the deal for me because i knew it wasnt beat on. From what i understand the 4v heads will fit the sohc motor with different chains and intake, but i havent really thought too much about it. The v10 mounts the same way as the 4.6 and 5.4 it just hangs out the front more, THAT would be a sweet swap. (hint hint out there you guys.... plenty of room for a v10!)

Having trouble uploading pics. Anyone know how? otherwise i'll just post links. Tonight slow progress. Tried installing the crown vic fuel rail... no go. Luckily i had a fuel rail from a superduty with a 5.4, and it fit perfectly around the 75mm throttle body with the 1" spacer and i still have access to the test port. And the fuel lines come out towards the fire wall instead of out the side for an extra clean look . It took a little fab work and i didnt feel like going further tonight. Hopefully tomorrow i'll be able to sort out the computer and fire it up!

Hey, if the swap you did makes you happy, then enjoy it. Sure, a 5.8L might have been easier to swap but then again you had a complete powertrain as a donor so swaping it in wouldn't be as big a deal as grafting the engine by itself to the older generation bits.
Parts are parts.
My 99 Intercepter has a 4.6 and it's a great engine, no complaints except for the over-torqued at the factory torque-to-yield head bolt that Ford refused to resolve under warranty (along with the cracked head, blown head gaskets, $250 towing bill, and cracked plastic intake from the "pop".
Seriously though, it's a good enigne. Reasonably lightweight but massive in size. Eyeballing the one in my car, I'd guess that it's physically larger than a 460.

Well I spent 5 hours last night running and checking wires, but it paid off in the end, Turned the key the theft light went out.... crank but no start. What could it be i thought retracing every wire i came in contact with in my head thinking everything is right! Checked injector pulse... good. It should start. OH yeah the fuel pump relay is out. Plugged it in, turned the key... And it came roaring to life. That had to be the most fulfilling thing i've accomplished in a while. Today i went to the shop to finish up some more little stuff like the shifter, reverse lights, and got a start on the exhaust. Ran it up to temp for like 15 mins, got the fans to cycle and it runs Great!!! I spun it up on the lift and all the gears work and it shifts nice, no vibrations. I;m very impressed. Gotta get my 3.73s now and we'll be in business. I have 3.08s now with 255/60/15. Mustangs came with 3.23 and 245/55/17 i think. So a 3.73 will run good with my truck tires, and when i put the stang wheels on it will do wheelies!!! Alright it wont but itll go good. Still tryin with the pics, and its driving me nuts!! I can put a 4.6 in a truck but i cant upload pics. I'm 22 a should know this stuff huh? I thought this would be a more popular thread. Not much interest huh?

at the age of 22 yeah you should haha but neways this sounds like it worked out really well for you. came across parts for a good cost , and seems everything went in just great im stoked to see some pics.
by the way it took me weeks and weeks to learn how to upload pics
just goto photobucket and make a profile then add your pics there. then when you have them on photobucket you can cut and past the img url really easy once you've done it haha
