Gas tank float ?

No wonder the gas gauge didn't work . One of the only things I thought couldn't be screwed up but the PO did it ! PO must have been short on $$ .All though it did happen & required a new sending unit , time & $$ I do find it quite humorous . Will replace the in line filter as it has some cork/ wood particles in it . Go figure .This has got to take the cake as one of the most offending PO fixes ..

Looks like it could be the work of an old farmer. Heck it may have even worked when the wood was dry. It is definitely the funniest DIY repair I've seen, but of course I haven't been around these trucks as long as most. As Larry the cable guy would say, "That's funny right there",LOL

That does look like a farm fix. It is amazing what we find. Thanks for sharing.

I do have a new sending unit that I bought with the adapter ring. 0-80 ohm range. My new tank came with one so I don't need it. PM me if you need it.

Well this sender didn't cure the problem .Still reads full when it is only 1/2 full now . Removed the cork & oak stopper , attached the brass float from the new one to the old sender installed & it still reads full . Made sure the sender was grounded . Nothing different . Damn. This thing is kicking my a$$ like the starter was . After reading some previous info on here & the ford barn I thought attaching the brass float to the old sender would have cured the problem since it has the correct ohm range . .

The thermal nature of these gauges makes them susceptible to failure. Your gauge may just be bad.

You can adjust the gauge a certain amount by way of an adjuster visible thru a hole in the back of the gauge. May help enough.

PS -- make sure your gauge panel is adequately grounded. With all that red paint it may not be.

If it was me, Id start here....disconnect the sending unit wire and with key on touch the bare end of the wire to an unpainted surface on the fuel tank. Gauge should read full grounded to the tank, empty unplugged. If it doesnt read full grounded to the tank, check your tank ground by connecting the sending unit wire to your battery negitave terminal with a jumper wire of some sort. It should then read full. If it does read full after grounding it to your battery and not to your fuel tank, you know the wiring is good to the gauge and your tank ground needs to be addressed.

If after that the gauge still doesn't function correct full grounded/ empty open then move the testing closer to the gauge. If the same test still don't move the needle correctly you now know the gauge is bad, or your float rod just needs to be adjusted.

Checked the gauge this afternoon . Reads correct .I have half a tank . Measured it w/ a stick sat. As soon as I turn the key to " On" it goes to full . Will do what Nicholas+ suggested & report back . Thanks to all .

All you needed was a new fishing float. Maybe hard to find in Florida?
