AC Compressor Clutch or Bearing or Both?
First time for everything… and I could sure use some advice
Nose coming from the AC Pulley when AC is off…. Occasional spinning of the inner hub assembly – but lots of squeal
With AC on… no noise/squeal at all – and lots of cold AC…..
Bad Clutch or Bad Bearing?? Or Both??
Can you replace just the bearing…

Thanks Guys….

Sounds like the friction surface is rubbing from a lack of clearance. I'd take the outer part off and see if the surfaces are galled up. Maybe sand them smooth or add a shim behind it. When you pull the outer part off be careful not to lose any shims. They are little washers that go in the center hole.

I'd try to get the outer plate off and inspect. You can run it without it on there, just remove the shim(s) from the hole in the compressor with a pocket magnet so you don't lose them. I don't see how the bearing would make the compressor try to engage unless it is so bad that the inner friction surface is out of place, and it would still make noise with the ac on.

Finally got to it today....
Turns out that a third of the ball bearings were missing, allowing so much play that the pulley was periodically wobbling against the clutch plate - thus engaging the AC Pump...
Replaced the coil, pulley w/bearing and clutch plate ($88) in about 1/2 hour and solved the problem...
Once apart and inspecting the carnage... If I hadn't parked the truck all last week and had drove it to work just one more time..... It could have cost me a lot more $$.
Felt so good about the job that once I finished - I drove into town and treated the ol' F250 to some new tires...
Thanks for the help and the diagrams.
